Not another API. Your actual app.

MCP — the Model Context Protocol — is how an AI client discovers and calls tools. Shorz ships its own MCP server inside the desktop app, so once you point Claude, Cursor, Codex, Antigravity or Gemini at it, they get the whole product: every panel, every model, your asset library, your connected social accounts.

The important part is where it runs. Your agent is driving the copy of Shorz open on your machine, on your files, with your credits. Renders land in your project folder. Edits happen locally. Nothing about the workflow becomes a cloud service you have to trust with your footage.

And 57 of the 187 tools don't need a project at all — hand your agent a file path and it can probe, trim, crop, concat, transcribe or generate straight from the chat.

Shorz has to be running

The tools drive the app that's open on your machine — that's what makes them able to render, publish and edit real files. Leave Shorz open while your agent works.

Node.js has to be on your PATH

Your AI app launches the connector as a Node process. Some apps (Cursor, Claude Desktop) bundle Node for themselves without adding it to your PATH — Connect AI Agent detects that and warns you.

Windows or Apple Silicon Mac

The connector runs where Shorz runs: Windows 10/11, or a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Your AI client can be anything that speaks MCP.

One prompt, a whole tool chain

You describe the outcome. The agent picks the tools, sets the panels, watches the render, and hands you the file — the same calls you could make by hand, just without you making them.

  • Every panel setting an agent can reach
  • Loose files edited with no project open
  • Publishing priced before anything goes out

Connected to Shorz MCP

“Make a 9:16 clip from podcast.mp4 with subtitles and AI B-roll, then render it.”

From one prompt

  • 1create_project + switch_project_aspect_ratio
  • 2import_frontend_assets · set_subtitle_settings
  • 3set_broll_settings (AI B-roll)
  • 4trigger_create_video → poll to done

Plain English in. Finished video out.

Connected in about a minute

Shorz writes the config for you. Open the header ⋮ menu → Connect AI Agent, pick your app, click add. The snippets below are the same thing, by hand.

1

Add the MCP server

In Shorz, open the header ⋮ menu → Connect AI Agent, pick your app, and click the add button. It writes the config file for you — or copy the snippet below and paste it yourself.

2

Install the Agent Skills

Same modal, step two. MCP gives your agent the buttons; the shorz-mcp skill bundle teaches it which button to press, what the enum values are, and how each panel actually works. Do both.

3

Restart and check

Restart your AI app, then ask it to list your Shorz projects. If projects come back, you're connected — start giving it real work.

Cursor

One-click in Shorz

Adds the shorz server to your global ~/.cursor/mcp.json. MCP servers you already have are left alone.

How you know it worked

Restart Cursor, then open Settings → Rules and confirm shorz-mcp is listed under Skills.

JSON%USERPROFILE%\.cursor\mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shorz": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["C:\\Users\\you\\AppData\\Local\\Programs\\Shorz\\resources\\mcp-server\\index.js"]
    }
  }
}

Swap the path for your own install — Connect AI Agent prints it, already escaped, and puts it on your clipboard.

Prompts that actually run

Every one of these maps onto tools in the list below. Copy one, paste it into your agent, swap the file names for yours.

Podcast to Shorts

“Make a 9:16 project from podcast.mp4, turn subtitles on, add AI B-roll, and render it.”

Edit a loose file

“Trim ad.mp4 to 0:12–0:41, crop it to 9:16, fade the audio out at the end, and save it to my Desktop.”

Thumbnails, four ways

“Check my Shorz balance first, then generate four thumbnail options for the title “I quit my job” and show me the files.”

Consistent characters

“Build a Text-to-Video project from script.md, use this photo as the character reference so she looks the same in every scene, then render it.”

Price it, then post it

“Tell me what it costs to publish today’s render to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube — then schedule all three for 6pm.”

Source the B-roll

“Find five Pexels drone clips of a coastline, download them, and import them into my project’s B-roll lane.”

Trend to brief

“What’s getting traction on X about AI video this week? Take the strongest angle, write a 30-second script, and set it as my brief.”

Talking head from a photo

“Make an avatar video from headshot.jpg reading this script, add two more angles of the same avatar, and put subtitles on it.”

All 187 tools, and what each one does

This is the whole connector — nothing held back for a docs page. Tools marked Credits spend from your Shorz balance exactly as the equivalent button in the app would; everything else is free. No project means it works on a bare file path.

Account & credits

7 tools

Sign the user in, read the balance, and check what a model costs before spending anything.

  • get_shorz_credits
    FreeNo project

Reads the signed-in account's Shorz credit balance and entitlements — the check an agent should run before any paid generation.

  • get_shorz_usage_and_pricing
    FreeNo project

Returns the same numbers as the in-app Usage & Pricing window: what each model costs in credits, plus recent spend.

  • shorz_sign_in_send_code
    FreeNo project

Step one of sign-in: emails the user a one-time Shorz login code, exactly like the in-app Sign in button.

  • shorz_sign_in_verify_code
    FreeNo project

Step two of sign-in: verifies the emailed code and signs the desktop app in. The header balance updates live.

  • read_api_keys
    FreeNo project

Reads the credentials the app holds — an optional bring-your-own ElevenLabs key, plus this machine's hardware id.

  • validate_elevenlabs_api_key
    FreeNo project

Checks that a bring-your-own ElevenLabs API key actually works before the app starts using it.

  • get_elevenlabs_balance
    FreeNo project

Reads the character balance left on the user's own ElevenLabs account (only relevant with a BYO key).

Projects & settings

9 tools

Create projects, read and patch settings.json, and switch the output frame — the spine every workflow runs on.

  • create_project
    Free

Creates a new Shorz project folder, ready for panels, assets and a render.

  • list_projects
    Free

Lists every project on disk with its path — how an agent finds the one to work in.

  • get_current_open_project
    Free

Reports which project the user currently has open on screen, so the agent edits what they are looking at.

  • read_project_settings
    Free

Reads a project's whole settings.json — every panel value the render will use.

  • update_project_settings
    Free

Patches settings.json with a targeted deep merge instead of rewriting it, so nothing the agent didn't mention gets lost.

  • delete_project
    Free

    Deletes a project.

  • switch_project_aspect_ratio
    Free

Switches the project between 16:9, 1:1 and 9:16 (and optionally its fps) by rewriting the output dimensions.

  • get_projects_path
    Free

Returns the base folder Shorz keeps projects in.

  • get_resource_path
    Free

Returns the app's resource folder — used to locate bundled files such as the connector itself.

Brief & main AI model

3 tools

Set the creative brief the way a human types it into the PromptBar, and pick the model that reads it.

  • set_user_instructions
    Free

Writes the PromptBar brief — what the video should be — without starting a render.

  • list_main_ai_models
    Free

Lists the main AI models available right now, straight from the live server catalog rather than a hardcoded list.

  • set_main_ai_model
    Free

Picks the main AI model that plans the edit — Claude, GPT or Gemini, whichever the catalog currently offers.

Create Video & rendering

8 tools

Start the same render the Create Video button starts, then watch it through to done.

  • trigger_create_video
    Credits

Presses Create Video. Uses the saved brief, or a one-off override that doesn't overwrite what the user typed.

  • generate_video
    Credits

Starts a render from a brief passed in the call and returns immediately — poll for status rather than blocking.

  • get_video_generation_status
    Free

Polls the current and most recent render: still working, finished, or failed.

  • stop_video_generation
    Free

Stops a render that is in progress.

  • edit_generated_video
    Credits

Edits a finished Auto Edit or Text to Video video from one plain-English instruction — 'cut 0:05–0:08', 'make the subtitles bigger', 'give scene 3 a different picture' — and re-renders a new version with every other AI decision pinned, so nothing you didn't mention changes and existing media isn't re-billed.

  • render_text_preview
    Free

Renders a title or subtitle to a PNG so the agent can actually see the type before committing it to a video.

  • compile_remotion_preview
    Free

Compiles the Remotion source behind the editor preview.

  • remotion_render
    Free

Renders a Remotion composition to MP4 as a background job — bundling plus rendering can take minutes.

    Free

The Settings panel: Auto Zoom (count, strength, speed and the zoom-in/zoom-out effect pools), face tracking, freeze-frame, grayscale, colour and speed.

  • set_subtitle_settings
    Free

Subtitle styling: font, colours, background, stroke, position and animation.

  • set_title_settings
    Free

The title card: text (emoji allowed), style, placement, background box, strokes and animation.

    Free

The Audio panel: dubbing, music and sound-effect toggles, reverb, volumes and music fades.

    Free

The audio-reactive overlay — spectrum bars, waveform, circular bars, voice blob and six more styles, each with its own colour.

  • set_overlay_settings
    Free

The Overlay panel: turns overlay effects on and picks them by name, validated against what's actually installed.

  • set_border_settings
    Free

The Border panel: on/off, width, two colours and an animated border style.

  • set_text_to_video_settings
    Free

The Text-to-Video panel: source mode, script or audio, transitions, image motion, model and reference images.

  • set_avatar_settings

The Avatar panel: model, script or audio, voice, avatar image, motion instructions and up to three extra angle shots of the same avatar.

  • set_podcast_settings
    Free

The Podcast panel: script, both voices, both avatars, display style and camera motion.

  • set_advertisement_settings
    Free

The Advertisement panel: product and character images, and the total ad length in 10-second storyboard scenes (10–40s).

  • set_music_video_settings
    Free

The Music Video panel: the video and keyframe image models, the cut pace, light-leak flashes on section changes, and which part of the song becomes the video.

Avatar, podcast & reference inputs

20 tools

The files those panels point at — avatar photos, extra angles, product shots, voice recordings, songs and character references.

  • select_avatar_image
    Free

Points the Avatar panel at a local photo — the person who will be lip-synced.

  • select_avatar_angle_image
    Free

Adds another shot of the same avatar from a different angle (max 3), so the presenter isn't locked to one pose.

  • save_avatar_image
    Free

Saves an avatar image into the project.

  • select_avatar_audio
    Free

Points the Avatar panel at an existing local audio file instead of a typed script.

    Free

Saves an audio file as the avatar's voice track.

  • delete_avatar_audio
    Free

Removes the avatar's saved audio track.

    Free

Clears the ad's product or character image.

  • save_text_to_video_typed_reference

  • update_text_to_video_typed_reference
    Free

Renames a typed reference or updates the notes attached to it.

  • delete_text_to_video_typed_reference
    Free

Removes a typed character, environment or style reference and its cached character sheet.

  • save_text_to_video_reference_images
    Free

Saves reference images to the older flat style list (typed references are preferred).

  • delete_text_to_video_reference_image
    Free

Removes an image from that older flat style list.

  • save_text_to_video_speech_audio
    Free

Saves a narration audio file for a Text-to-Video project, instead of generating the voice.

  • delete_text_to_video_speech_audio
    Free

    Removes that saved narration audio.

  • select_music_video_audio
    Free

Sets a local song as the Music Video project's song and returns its length, which every cost estimate is based on.

  • remove_music_video_audio
    Free

Removes the Music Video project's song (your original file is never touched).

  • select_music_video_character_image
    Free

Sets an optional artist or character image, so the lead looks the same in every shot of the music video.

  • remove_music_video_character_image
    Free

Removes that artist or character image; the render then casts the video from the song and the brief.

Media generation

9 tools

Make the footage, stills and voice you don't have — no project needed, straight to a file path.

  • generate_images
    CreditsNo project

Generates images with model, aspect, quality and variation control — and optional face references so the same person comes back every time.

  • generate_scene_image
    CreditsNo project

Generates a single scene still through the same stack Text-to-Video exports use — the one to pick when reference-image editing matters.

  • generate_image_to_video
    CreditsNo project

Turns a local still into a short video clip via Seedance, Kling and friends. Minutes, not seconds.

  • proxy_aiml_video_generation
    CreditsNo project

Direct text-to-video and image-to-video generation through the credit proxy, for agents that want to name the model and poll it themselves.

  • generate_tts_preview
    CreditsNo project

Speaks a line out loud as a real audio file, so a voice can be auditioned before a whole script is narrated.

  • generate_music
    CreditsNo project

Generates an instrumental music track from a text prompt into the audio library — ElevenLabs Music when it must run an exact length (10s to 5 min), or Google Lyria 2 for cheap bed material at a length it picks itself.

  • generate_sound_effect
    CreditsNo project

Generates one sound effect from a short physical description — a whoosh, a UI click, a riser, an impact — at the length you ask for (0.5–22s), saved as an .mp3 in the audio library. The same engine Auto SoundFX uses inside a render.

  • list_elevenlabs_voices
    FreeNo project

Lists the ElevenLabs voices available to the account, including cloned ones on a BYO key.

  • transcribe_video_file
    CreditsNo project

Transcribes a local video or audio file to text as a background job — long footage takes minutes.

Creates a Canvas graph, or adds nodes and wires to one, and opens it in Shorz so the user watches it appear. Nothing runs yet.

  • canvas_run
    Credits

Runs a graph and returns its exported file. Only out-of-date nodes run; a paid run first returns its itemised estimate and waits for an approved credit limit.

  • canvas_stop
    Free

Stops a Canvas run, like the Stop button. Generations already sent finish and are kept; the next run picks up where it stopped.

  • canvas_pick_take
    Free

Chooses which take of a node is used, like the take arrows on the node. Everything downstream re-runs from the picked take next time.

  • canvas_remove
    Free

Deletes nodes or wires from a graph, like selecting them and pressing Delete. All-or-nothing; generated files stay on disk.

  • canvas_duplicate
    Free

Copies a graph — every node, wire and take, results included — so you can branch it and only re-run what you change.

  • canvas_rename
    Free

Renames a Canvas graph without bringing Canvas on screen.

  • canvas_delete
    Free

Deletes a Canvas graph when asked: the file moves to Canvas/.trash and everything it made stays in My Assets.

Live UI control

6 tools

When something has no API, the agent can just use the app: read the screen, then move a real mouse. Refused rather than sent blind if the target is covered or disabled.

  • get_ui_map
    Free

Snapshots the live Shorz window — every interactive element with its name, role, value and screen position, plus where the user currently is.

  • scroll_ui_element_into_view
    Free

Scrolls an off-screen control into view and returns its new coordinates.

  • ui_click
    Free

Clicks a control with a real, visible mouse — and refuses, naming the blocker, if Shorz isn't focused or something covers the target.

  • ui_type
    Free

Types into whatever has keyboard focus, chunked so controlled inputs don't drop characters.

  • ui_press_keys
    Free

Presses keys and shortcuts — Escape, Tab, Enter, Ctrl+A, arrow repeats.

  • ui_scroll
    Free

Scrolls the mouse wheel over a point, for browsing a long list.

Jobs & app state

3 tools

The plumbing: poll long jobs, check for updates, and read the app's event log when something needs debugging.

  • get_job_status
    Free

Polls any background job — renders, generations, uploads, transcriptions — until it completes or fails.

  • check_for_update
    Free

Checks whether a newer Shorz version is out, with the release and download links.

  • fetch_app_events
    Free

The raw internal event log. For renders prefer the status tools; this is for logs and debugging.

Questions worth asking

Does Shorz have to be open?

Yes. The connector talks to the running desktop app, which is exactly why it can render, publish and touch real files on your disk rather than just describing what it would do. Leave Shorz open while your agent works.

Does the MCP cost extra?

No. The connector ships with the app and there is no separate MCP plan. Tools that generate, render or publish spend the same Shorz credits they would if you clicked the button yourself — and renders your agent starts draw on the same 4 free Auto Edit & Clipping videos a week.

Which AI apps does it work with?

Cursor, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex Desktop, Antigravity and Gemini CLI all have setup in the app, and five of the six are one click. Anything else that speaks MCP over stdio works too — point it at the same connector path.

What are the Agent Skills, and do I need them?

MCP hands your agent the buttons; the bundled shorz-mcp skill teaches it which button to press, what each panel's values mean, and the workflows that chain them. Install both. Without the skills an agent can still call tools, it just guesses more.

Is my footage uploaded somewhere?

The 22 headless edits — trim, crop, resize, concat, audio work — run locally on your machine, no upload. AI generation (images, video, voice, music, sound effects, transcription) goes through the Shorz proxy to the model providers, the same as it does inside the app.

Do tools return giant blobs of base64?

Never. Every result that would carry media is written to a real file and the response carries the absolute path instead — so it stays cheap in context and chains straight into the next tool.

Can it publish on my behalf?

Yes, to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Threads and Pinterest, once those accounts are connected in Shorz. Ask it to estimate first: there's a tool that prices the post before anything goes out, and cancelling a scheduled post refunds the credits.

Can my agent find media without spending credits?

Yes. Pexels stock video and photos, GIPHY GIFs and stickers, and public-domain (CC0) music and sound effects from Openverse are all searchable and downloadable for free. Credits only come into it when the agent generates something new — an image, a clip, a voice, a music track or a sound effect.

Why is there a mouse-and-keyboard set of tools?

For the rare corner with no dedicated tool, the agent can read the live window and click it like a person. It refuses to click blind: if Shorz isn't focused, the control is disabled, or something covers it, it names the blocker instead.

Mac?

Yes. The connector runs where Shorz runs — Windows, or a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Your AI client itself can be on whatever you like.

Prefer to click the buttons yourself?

Every MCP tool is a thing you can also just do in the app. These are the same capabilities with a human in the chair.
